Seamless Stainless Steel TP410 Pipe
What is a Seamless Stainless Steel TP410 Pipe?
Seamless Stainless Steel TP410 Pipe is a 12 % chromium martensitic stainless steel produced from a solid billet without a welded seam. It is the general-purpose grade of the martensitic family, valued for combining moderate corrosion resistance with high strength and hardness after heat treatment.
Unlike austenitic grades, TP410 can be quenched and tempered to develop tensile strengths well above 600 MPa while retaining useful atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion resistance thanks to its chromium content. In the annealed condition it is readily machined and formed, then heat treated to the required strength level.
Supplied typically to ASTM A268 (tubing) and A790 (pipe) in the annealed condition, TP410 seamless pipe serves pump shafts, valve components, turbine parts and steam-service piping where strength and wear resistance matter more than maximum corrosion resistance.
Stainless Steel TP410 vs TP410S vs TP420 vs TP304: The Martensitic Choice
The 400-series martensitic grades trade some corrosion resistance for strength and hardness. The comparison below shows where TP410 fits.
| Grade | Key Chemistry / Condition | Where It Fits |
|---|---|---|
| TP410 | 12.5Cr, C 0.15 % max, hardenable | General-purpose martensitic grade; heat-treatable to high strength with moderate corrosion resistance |
| TP410S | 12.5Cr, C 0.08 % max, ferritic | Weldable variant for refinery service where hardenability is not wanted |
| TP420 | 13Cr, C 0.15 % min | Higher carbon for blades and wear parts requiring greater hardness |
| TP304 | 18Cr-8Ni austenitic | Superior corrosion resistance but lower strength and no hardenability |

Why TP410 Is the Workhorse Martensitic Grade
TP410 is specified where mechanical performance leads the requirement list. It can be hardened and tempered across a wide range — from about 850-900 °C annealed condition up to quenched-and-tempered tensile strengths well beyond 700 MPa — while still offering the stainless character that carbon steel cannot provide in mildly corrosive service. Typical duty includes steam and turbine components, valve internals, pump shafts, bolting and oil-country equipment subject to erosion.
Supplied seamless and in the annealed condition, our TP410 pipe is ready for the customer's own heat treatment or can be delivered quenched-and-tempered to a specified strength class. The absence of a weld seam also matters here: martensitic weld zones are hardenability-sensitive, so a seamless tube eliminates that entire design concern.
Manufacturing Process
Our seamless production route for Seamless Stainless Steel TP410 Pipe follows these documented stages:
- Billet Selection & Inspection: Certified EAF/AOD-melted rounds are ultrasonically inspected for internal soundness before entering the mill.
- Hot Piercing & Extrusion: The solid billet is cross-roll pierced or hot extruded at about 1150-1200 °C to form a hollow shell, consolidating the structure without any weld seam.
- Cold Drawing / Pilgering: Successive cold-drawing or cold-pilgering passes reduce diameter and wall to final size with tight dimensional control.
- Intermediate Annealing: Stress-relief or intermediate anneals between passes restore ductility for further reduction.
- Solution Treatment: A final solution anneal (typically 1040-1100 °C for austenitic grades) followed by rapid quench dissolves carbides and restores the fully austenitic, corrosion-resistant structure.
- Pickling & Passivation: Scale is removed in an acid bath, leaving the uniform passive surface required for corrosion service.
- Straightening, Cutting & Testing: Pipes are straightened, cut to length, then verified by eddy-current/ultrasonic examination, hydrostatic pressure testing and full dimensional inspection.
Surface Finish Options
- Pickled & Annealed: Standard supply condition; uniform matte passive surface, ideal for further fabrication.
- Bright Annealed: Annealed in hydrogen atmosphere for a reflective, scale-free surface used in instrumentation and sanitary lines.
- Mechanically Polished: Grit 180-600 finishes for decorative and hygienic applications.
- Mirror Polished: A fully reflective finish for architectural and high-purity service.

Common Industrial Applications
Because of its characteristic property profile, Seamless Stainless Steel TP410 Pipe is specified in the following industries and services:
- Oil & Gas Equipment: Valve bodies, stems, chokes and flow-control parts requiring strength with mild corrosion resistance.
- Power Generation: Steam-turbine blades, bolts and casings in moderate-temperature steam service.
- Pump & Compressor Industry: Shafts, sleeves and wear rings subject to combined stress and erosion.
- Petrochemical Furnace Hardware: Tube supports and hangers where oxidation resistance up to about 650 °C is adequate.
- Mining & Mineral Processing: Hydrocyclone components and slurry-handling parts needing wear resistance.
- General Engineering: Machine parts, fasteners and tooling applications demanding a hardenable stainless steel.
Quality Assurance, Testing and Documentation
Every length of Seamless Stainless Steel TP410 Pipe passes through a documented quality-control chain before dispatch:
- Material Certification: EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates are issued for every heat; 3.2 certification with third-party witness (TUV, SGS, BV) is available on request.
- Chemical & Mechanical Testing: Heat-level chemical analysis plus tensile, hardness and, where applicable, flattening, flaring and reverse-flattening tests per the governing standard.
- Non-Destructive Examination: 100 % eddy-current or ultrasonic testing and hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing in line with the standard's supplementary requirements.
- Dimensional & Visual Inspection: Full OD, wall thickness, ovality and length verification with visual surface inspection after pickling or finishing.
- Traceability & Marking: Heat numbers stenciled or banded on every length, maintaining complete melt-to-pipe traceability.
Export and Packaging
Pipes are bundled with steel strapping and fitted with plastic or steel end caps, then packed in seaworthy wooden cases or crates and secured in containers for long-distance ocean freight. Standard export documentation — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, mill test certificates and, where required, third-party inspection reports — accompanies every shipment. Container-load and bulk project orders receive priority production slots and consolidated shipping documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Is TP410 pipe supplied annealed or heat treated?
A: Standard stock is fully annealed for machinability and further fabrication. Hardened-and-tempered supply can be arranged to customer hardness and strength specifications.
Q2. How does TP410 corrosion resistance compare with 304?
A: TP410 resists atmospheric exposure, fresh water and mild chemicals, but its chromium-only (11.5–13.5 %) martensitic structure is clearly inferior to 18Cr/8Ni austenitic grades in acids and chlorides. It is chosen for strength, not maximum corrosion resistance.
Q3. Can TP410 pipe be welded?
A: Yes, but preheating (200–300 °C) and post-weld heat treatment are required to prevent cracking in the heat-affected zone. Filler metals such as 410 or 309 are used depending on service requirements.
Q4. What non-destructive testing is available?
A: Ultrasonic examination per ASTM A268 supplementary requirements, eddy-current testing and hydrostatic pressure testing are all offered with documented results.
